Our Legacy Through Time

For five generations, our family has dedicated itself to the art of high jewelry craftsmanship. Each piece tells a story of heritage, passion, and timeless excellence.
1st generation-1890s

From Tashkent to Jerusalem

  • The Moussaieff family leaves Tashkent, Uzbekistan, making the journey to Jerusalem by donkey, carrying little more than their trade knowledge in gemstones and natural pearls.

Their patriarch, Rabbi Shlomo Moussaieff, had run a prosperous pearl-trading business in Bukhara since the 1850s.

  • Upon arrival, the family co-founds the Bukharian Quarter, the second-oldest neighborhood in Jerusalem, establishing roots and a reputation in the city's gem trade.

Jerusalem, Wartime, and the Birth of a Legend

Born in Jerusalem into the family's jewellery trade, Shlomo Moussaieff enlists in the British Army at 17 to fight in World War II, serving in the Egyptian desert and Italy.

1948 War of Independence: Shlomo fights for Jerusalem and is captured by the Jordanian Arab Legion. He spends a year imprisoned in Transjordan, forming an unlikely bond with a Jordanian soldier who would later become a trusted connection to the region.

After his release, Shlomo returns to Jerusalem and opens his own antique jewellery shop near Jaffa Gate, honing his eye for rare stones and ancient artefacts.

1963

London: Moussaieff takes Park Lane

Shlomo opens Moussaieff Jewellers in the lobby of the London Hilton on Park Lane, the only jeweller ever to have its name displayed on the building's exterior. The store still operates today.

The store becomes a destination for international royalty, supplying jewelery to European monarchies, Saudi royals, and Gulf-state dignitaries.

Shlomo's daughter Dorrit marries Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, President of Iceland, in 2003, becoming First Lady of Iceland and carrying the Moussaieff name into the world of heads of state.

2001

The Moussaieff Red Diamond

The world's largest red diamond bears the family name

Shlomo acquires the Red Shield Diamond, a 5.11-carat Fancy Red stone discovered in Brazil in 1989, one of fewer than 30 true red diamonds ever found. It is renamed the Moussaieff Red Diamond and is recognised by the GIA as the largest natural red diamond ever graded.

Estimated value: $20 million. It has been exhibited at the Smithsonian and featured in major international gem exhibitions.

Family expansion~1992

East meets West: Hong Kong and Washington

Rafael Aharoni expands the family's reach into Asia, establishing operations in Hong Kong, opening the family to an entirely new market over three decades ago. Rafael serves as an advisor during the Reagan administration and later serves as president of Rotary Club, bridging the world of fine jewelery with civic and political influence in the United States.
