History:

Originally called Decoration Day, is a day to honor the brave and remember those who have given their lives for the greater good of our countries’ freedom. Although considered a day of outdoor barbeque and celebration, the real purpose is to honor the men and women who have died fighting in war. It all started on May 5, 1862, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. May 30th was declared a day to put flowers on the graves of loved ones and honor those who lost their lives during the late rebellion. This date was chosen because it was not the anniversary for any specific battle.
